CIRRHOSIS

Cirrhosis is a serious liver disease in which normal liver cells get damaged and fibrous tissue (scar tissue) starts forming in their place. This problem gradually increases and affects the ability of the liver to function normally. This disease can occur due to many reasons and if not treated on time, it can prove to be life threatening. 

Major causes of cirrhosis  

1. Excessive alcohol consumption: Chronic excessive alcohol consumption can lead to cirrhosis.   

2. Viral Hepatitis: Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C viral infections cause serious damage to the liver.   

3. Fatty Liver Disease: Due to obesity, diabetes and sedentary lifestyle, fat accumulates in the liver which can lead to cirrhosis.   

4. Genetic diseases: like hemochromatosis or Wilson's disease   

5. Other causes: Long-term drug abuse, autoimmune diseases, exposure to toxins. 

Symptoms of cirrhosis:   

• yellowing of skin and eyes   
• Itching and itching on the skin
