colonoscopy is a medical medical procedure

COLONOSCOPY

Colonoscopy is a medical examination procedure used to detect and diagnose diseases of the  large intestine (colon) and rectum. The procedure uses a thin and flexible tube with a small  camera at the end. And there are lights.

This procedure helps to get a clear view of the inner walls of the large intestine and is helpful in  diagnosing potential problems, such as polyps, inflammation, lesions, or cancer.

 Types of Colonoscopy

There are mainly two types of colonoscopy:

  1. Diagnostic Colonoscopy: It is used to detect intestinal problems such as bleeding,  inflammation, or diseases like cancer.
  2. Therapeutic Colonoscopy: Treatment is performed in a therapeutic procedure, such as  removing polyps, opening blockages in the ducts, or taking a biopsy.

  Why is colonoscopy done?

  • Colonoscopy Abdominal pain or problems with bowel movements, long-term diarrhea,  constipation, or blood in the stool.
  • Screening for polyps: Polyps are abnormal growths in the large intestine that can lead to  cancer.
  • Bowel cancer screening: This procedure is routinely performed to detect bowel cancer in  people over the age of 50.
  • Intestinal obstruction or wound, or infection.

  How is Colonoscopy done?

Before doing colonoscopy, some preparations are done which are as follows-

  1. Before the procedure, the intestine is completely cleaned.
  2. The doctor will advise you to take a special type of diet and some medicines.
  3. If needed, you are given mild anesthesia.
  4. The doctor inserts the colonoscope into the large intestine through the rectum.
  5. If any abnormality is seen in the large intestine, then the doctor takes a small piece of  intestinal tissue, which we call a biopsy.
  6. The procedure may last from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

  Benefits of Colonoscopy

  •  Opportunity to prevent cancer by timely removal of polyps.
  •  Help in knowing the exact cause of intestinal problems.
  • Quick removal of small problems, such as polyps.
  • Care after colonoscopy
  • After the procedure you are advised to rest for the day.
  • Eat light and easily digestible food.
  • Avoid overly spicy or heavy food
  • If you notice fever, severe stomach pain, or blood in the stool, consult a doctor immediately

 Is this procedure safe?

Yes, colonoscopy is generally considered safe, although sometimes there may be minor risks  such as:-

  •   Stomach bloating or mild pain
  •  Bleeding (if biopsy was done)
  •  Sometimes minor intestinal injury

  conclusion

Colonoscopy is an effective and safe procedure that helps in timely diagnosis and treatment of  problems of the large intestine and rectum. If you have any stomach related problems then  discuss the procedure with your doctor.  Taking care of intestinal health is very important for your overall health. Major diseases can be  avoided with timely examination and proper treatment.
